About This TOWN

//

Jonestown was founded in 1796 by settlers who were trying to find a passage to Maryland after mis-interpreting a passage in the Bible. In its early days, the city was the target of many Indian raids, and to this day many forts and trading posts sites are still marked and remain.

Mount Ararat, is a name that may not sound familiar to many of us. It is a Biblical name, and was also the name for Old Bunker Hill. The history of how our local hill areas were named is a mystery to me, and I don't know how Mount Ararat was named other than it is a “hill,” and it has a great deal of history. Pennsylvania had only one volcano and that was Old Bunker Hill. Running East and West along the Little Swatara Creek, it was a type of volcano that forms breaks in the earth’s crust from which molten rock flows. Old Bunker Hill was an active volcano some 400 million years ago when the area was part of a huge ocean and the hill became covered with rust colored rocks called iron rocks. Eventually, Old Bunker Hill became dotted with many summer cottages in which people from as far as New York would spend the summer months. In time, the homes were converted to year round living. Judge William Rank was included in the list of prominent men of our County who resided on Old Bunker Hill. He was born in Jonestown in1795. He purchased a farm in 1844 near the Swatara Creek and in 1847was commissioned as an Associate Judge of the Courts of Lebanon County
